Why do your kids need physical activity?

At The Fit House we believe that an active child is a healthy child. Studies show that the average child in the UK spends 17 hours a week in front of an electronic screen of some sort. That’s almost double the 8.8 hours spent playing outside per week!

Physical activity for kids

Physical activity is vital for a child’s development. It lays the foundation for a healthy and active life. We can split the benefits of exercise into physical and psychological:

Physical benefits

  • Develop muscular strength
  • Develop cardiovascular capacity
  • Keep bones strong
  • Maintain a healthy and balanced weight – lowering the chance of getting type 2 diabetes in childhood and adulthood
  • Aerobic activity has been shown to increase the size of essential brain structures and number of neural connections

Pyschological benefits

  • Physical and cognitive development work together. When children are active, their brain develops allowing for new types of brain activity
  • Increases concentration and alertness
  • Increased physical activity in children has been linked with higher test scores in reading and maths
  • Frequent physical activity improves behaviour in the classroom and in social settings
  • Physical activity is associated with improved emotional response and behaviour
  • Physical activity decreases symptoms of depression and anxiety in children

How much exercise is required?

Studies have shown that as little as 60 minutes of exercise per day can lower rates of obesity in kids. It doesn’t have to be gym or running! It can simply be fun activities that increase the heart rate and stimulate the body’s receptors.

At The Fit House we try to incorporate all components of fitness into an hour of fun and enjoyment. Exercise doesn’t have to be painful or boring! Play-based activities help to develop a range of key skills, which make physical activity enjoyable now and in later life!

We run kids and teens fitness classes after school. Joins us weekdays at 4pm for age 6-10 and 5pm age 11-16. Call us at 07817107314 or email [email protected]
